If you watch any film made within ten years of 1945, you will see they are made with alcohol and tobacco smoke in every scene. That is where my father got his idea of how life ought to be. And I discovered years later that second-hand smoke causes the loss of short term memory. If you will quickly envision a flashback scene with my father chain smoking cigarettes and calling out spelling words to me you may understand how I had no chance whatsoever of remembering how to spell Minneapolis with him yelling M-I-N-N-E-A-P-0-L-I-S at me throughout eternity in our living room when I was in the fourth grade. And him telling me I was stupid. Well. Someone was being stupid. I will grant him that.
