The Uncarved Block

Is how we come straight from the womb. A pure blob of Nature with no ideas about how we ought to be. And we are quite prepared to live a throughly natural life. But. The world has ideas and expectations and we are strapped with the task of knowing what is right for us and what is wrong for us all our life long.

This is the struggle for our true identity and it is essential to us that we win it. Joseph Campbell saw this as a contest for our soul between the two masks we choose between.

The Primary Mask is the mask that is expected we will wear by the culture that receives us at birth. Society has its ideas for us, our parents have their ideas for us, our grandparents have their ideas for us etc. And the battle is on from the start because the other Mask inviting us to wear is, in Campbell’s mind, The Antithetical Mask, as being directly opposite and opposed to the Primary Mask of the cultural expec-tations.

Who will we be? This is the on-going question all through our life. Whose interests and expectations do we serve? We live to find out!
