I have never before experienced the depth and truth of life and being than is my joy to behold and relish here, now at this point in my life. I think that doesn’t become possible until “after a certain age,” and I am glad I have lived this long (82 in two months).
All of the things I have spent my entire life talking about and exploring have opened up into the experience of the truth of what I have been saying, and it is a wonder to behold.
About three years into the ministry I had an experience with the untimely death of a woman in a traffic crash that could have been avoided in ten thousand ways, and it struck me like a bolt that if this is the best God can do, who needs God? And if this is not the best God can do, who needs God? And that led me to ask, “What kind of God kills his own son to keep himsef from killing all of humanity?” And the absurdity of it has been a constant companion throughout all of the years in the ministry and in retirement to here, now.
I remained in the ministry by “turning the light around,” and seeing that the ministry is not about theology but it is about the experience of “that which has always been called God.” And I lived to explore and to invite others to explore the experience of that which has always been called God in their own life.
The experience of numinous reality is a fact “that can be experienced but not understood, and understood but not explained,” by human beings from the beginning of human beings to right here, right now. But. Theology is nothing more than a collection of opinions about hearsay. And to get to the experience of God we have to be very quiet and allow the experience of, the encounter with, Numinious Realty to become present in its own time, in its own way, throughout time. And that is what I have been doing and continue to do, and will continue doing as long as life lasts. And then what? We do not know. But, we can look forward to it, wondering what will meet us on the other side.
