Wu-wei

A Taoist term meaning achieving things without forcing things. It is reading the situation (Riding a bucking bronco, say), getting a feel for the flow, the rhythm, the harmony of the situation and knowing what is coming and what is called for and responding with just the right touch so that everything falls exactly into place before the bell rings and the ride is done.

It means knowing what we are doing and doing it exactly as called for (In a Ballroom Dancing competition, say), at one with the music and with our partner through the entire performance with nothing out of step and everything just as it should be so that the applause announces the winner before the judges do.

It means doing what needs to be done, when, where and how it needs to be done–or, as the old Taoists would say about the Tao, “It is doing the right thing in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, in each situation as it arises,” for the pure joy of doing it and the satisfaction of having done it,” all our life long.
