Matthew 6:34 “Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.” This in reply to the anxiety of tomorrow and the far distant future with things like, “What will I eat, drink, wear, and what if it rains…” “Just live here, now!” was Jesus’ advice. Jesus was a lot more Taoist than he was Christian. “The Spirit is like the wind that blows where it will.” “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And then, my favorite, he flips things completely around with the parable of the unjust landowner paying his workers the same wage for different amounts of labor. And there is the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids, with the Wise Bridesmaids refusing to share their lamp oil with the Foolish Bridesmaids with, “We aren’t your keepers! You go get your own oil!” What happened to “Love your neighbor” here? And what became of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? Jesus has some answering to do, I’d say.
