In the beginning, the early humans, particularly Shamans and traditional healers and guides for indigenous people, attempted to explain the unknown, the mysteries of life and being, with songs and chants and words that came to them out of the silence of their own trance states. The first sentence about God created God, and we have been adding sentences about God ever since.

Words about God are all we have ever had. The word “God” is a word without a referent. Thus the early Shamans created referents to stand for God. Totem Poles, carved wood and rocks were revered as holy and were placed in holy places to represent the Gods who were present only in the imaginations of the people worshipping those Gods. But the Gods themselves did not exist. Words about God are as close to God as anyone has ever gotten. And over the years we have developed words about words about God, and religion consists of lexicons of specialized words and phrases imbued with sacred impressions and beliefs sung and chanted producing spells and religious experiences that worshippers take to be God wherein an act of God is taken to be God and everyone goes home filled with God, to return next week and do it again. But. Words about God are as close to God as we ever get, because who can look upon God without dying or being blinded by the sight?

Words about God create God as a production of our imagination enhanced by everyone else’s imagination.
