The Tao consists of doing the right thing, in the right place, at the right time, in the right way in each situation as it arises. And we know what right is in all these places by knowing what we say is right and hoping to be right about it.
Nobody can be assured of knowing what right is in any given place and time, and everybody has an opinion. But only time will tell if it is right or not.
I take this to mean that we have to go by our own sense of what is right here, now, in the moment of our doing, knowing that we may be wrong about what we say is right. And in that moment–in every moment that comes my way–I will do things the way I will do things and hope for the best outcome available. NOT the way someone else might do things or have me do things (My mother, for instance, and certainly my grandmother).
I will do things the way I would do things and I hope you would say the same thing about the way you would do things. A lot rides on what we say and do where right and wrong are concerned. And it is important that we do what we say is right in each situation as it arises–and that we be capable of changing our mind should it be that we need to over time.
