In John 10:30, Jesus declares, “The Father and I are one.” And, in John 14:9, Jesus says, “When you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” And, we think, “Okay, we get it. Jesus and God are One.” But then, this comes along in Matthew 25:40, “In as much as you have done it (or failed to do it) to one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done it, or failed to to it, unto me.” Clearly indicating that Jesus is one with the least of his brothers and sisters, and as with the least of them, so it is with the rest of them. Jesus is one with God and one with humanity. And in John 17:22-23 Jesus prays,  “that they may be one as we are one— ²³ I in them and you in me…” And no one takes these texts as meaning that Jesus and each human being are one, that Jesus is one with us and is each of us. What up with that? Jesus is one with God but not one with me and you?

And here is one to follow this one: How many of us, for how often and how long, are one with ourselves? How many of us are who we are for how often and how long? Where and when are we most ourselves? Most clearly living out of our core identity? Being most truly, most completely who we are? Where are we what are we doing when we are being absolutely lost in ourselves and being who we are? And when we are there, then, how close to God are we being? How close to Jesus are we being? So that when we are being absolutely, truly us, are we not also being absolutely, truly God and Jesus?

And thus, our role for the remainder of our life is not to be God or to be Jesus, but to be who we are! To be ourselves! To be just like us! Because when we are true to ourselves, we are truly God and we are truly Jesus.
